What is Dementia

Dementia is the umbrella term used for a number of symptoms caused by over a hundred different diseases, Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Not everyone will get all the symptoms and some people will be more affected than others in some.

  • Short term memory loss
  • Difficulty in sequencing steps to accomplish a task
  • Reduced ability to use abstract thinking and solve problems
  • Changes in the ability to use language
  • Reduced focus and attention
  • Difficulty recalling the date, day, or location
  • Often accompanied by sadness, anxiety or depression

Dementia can affect anyone, anywhere, taking its toll on individuals and families worldwide.

But whatever the cause, a diagnosis can be devastating and cause anxiety and depression – even in the most robust individual. Brain changes are rarely immediate and can develop over quite long periods of time, but coping can be challenging and emotional which is why specialist counselling can help.

“The counselling sessions provided me with a sense of understanding and support during a difficult time. I highly recommend their services.”
